Doors

I love looking at front doors.
When I go for walks, it's the front door that I look at first.
Inviting doors are what make the house a home.
Add fresh paint to the door, a few plants and it says, Welcome!

"A small key opens big doors"
~Turkish Proverb~

"Personality has the power to open many doors, but character must keep them open"
~Flora Whittemore~

"Every wall is a door"
~Ralph Waldo Emerson~

All doors open to courtesy.
~Thomas Fuller~

Door: What a dog is perpetually on the wrong side of.
~Ogden Nash~

When one door closes, another opens; but we often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door that we do not see the one which has opened for us.
~Alexander Graham Bell~

"Don't spend time beating on a wall, hoping to transform it into a door."

~Coco Chanel~

Doors
by Tricia McGill.
Life is a series of pathways and doorways.
The doorway to life is always open; with welcoming arms she calls you in.
Some doors are large and some are small, but no matter the size they have one thing in common. To let you in to a room or a garden, a new slant on life that's sure to be different.
A door to a church where we go to pray, a door to a heart where we long to stay.
Red doors or brown doors, tin ones or wooden, some with bars and padlocks to form a prison.
I remember a door in a small town in Cornwall with a porch made of wood, surrounded by creepers, so quaint, so welcoming, so olde world charming.
A door to a cottage built long long ago.
Doorways to pubs and doorways to schools;
No matter our age, our gender or colour, we all go through doors on our way to our goals.
We have to enter new doors each fresh day to take us forever onwards;
To open new chapters in life's endless search for avenues of learning.

If you're replacing your old door with a prehung unit, first determine if you need a left- or right-hand door. Stand in the doorway and face outside. If the lockset is on your right, you have a right-hand door.

  1. Christine, what a wonderful post about these doors! I've often said to my family that people really need to focus on their doors more because that is the focal point when looking at a home. That purple door just intrigues me -- it makes me wonder what the rest of the home looks like. Don't you agree? A turquoise door? wonderful! I believe it would also be wonderful if we painted the interior doors of our homes to also create the ambiance for the room. Anyway -- I definitely love these doors and have bookmarked it!

  3. I loved all of the door pictures. I'm drawn to front doors too. When we were lucky enough to go to France a couple of years ago I came home with a lot of door pictures. One of the pictures is now framed and hanging in my bedroom. Thanks too for the beautiful quotes.

  4. Hi Christine, I love the pictures of the doors and their colors. I've been to Nantucket a few times with friends on their boat and looking at these pictures reminded me of walking around the island. They have unique door colors along with door knockers and door hardware. During the winter months the door knockers and hardware are removed to prevent them from being stolen, what a shame. Most of the homes are occupied during the season. Thanks for sharing. Jude

  5. Gorgeous! I think I recognized Susan's door from BNOTP! right? Is your front door there? The one that is open? :)...cause I'm guessing you wouldn't walk up to someone else's door and open it for your picture. ha.

  6. Funny, right before checking your blog, I had just come in from sweeping the front porch and thinking about what color I should paint the front door. Now, I still can't decide! There are so many colors! So many styles! But one thing is for sure. I must have flowers no matter what color! Terrific post!
    Blessings!

  7. AHHHHHH... what a breath of fresh air!
I love looking at doors too! Of course, my mind always wanders to the family that lives behind the different doors. How many children do they have? Do they enjoy visitors? Any pets?... Dee Dee

  10. Doors!! love this post.

It reminds me of the words to an old Sunday School song (talking about heaven and being a Christian) that goes like this.

"One door and only one and yet it's sides are two. I'm on the inside, on which side are you?"

I like Betsy's comment. Wondering the same thing? ;) And, AMEN! to how "welcoming" the front door makes the rest of the house seem. I think (and have been thinking for awhile now) that mine/ours needs a NEW wreath. Thanks for the friendly reminder...
