RAK...

RANDOM  ACTS  OF  KINDNESS
I love reading about others,
who are a blessing to someone.

My friend Betsy, has asked that we share our RAK's.
I decided to join.

At first I felt a bit awkward sharing.
But because it's Betsy Black,
(blog: My Five Men)
who I admire and adore,
I will share.

~*~*~*~

You've seen them.
They are at a stop light.
They are there on the corners of streets.
They are asleep on benches.
They are in the cities.
They are in our neighborhoods.
My heart goes out to the homeless
who truly are in need of help.

I first heard of Blessing Bags a few years ago.
They are zip lock bags filled with food and personal supplies.
They are so easy to make.
A quick visit to the Dollar Store and
you have all the necessities.
Keep one in your car and
when you come to a stop light,
instead of looking away,
reach for your Blessing Bag!

~*~*~*~

My RAK for this week was giving a Blessing Bag
to a person who sleeps on a bench.
I drive by him on my way to take care of Trey.
He is hunched and bent over
but in a some what sitting position.
He is covered with a blanket, except for his head,
 which has a hoody.
It's dark out and usually nobody is around.
He's not on the side of the street,
so I can't just hand it to him.
My heart hurts every time I see him
and I've seen him several times.

Because of Betsy's challenge,
I knew I had to get the courage to
park my car and walk up to him.
And that's what I did.

Thank you Betsy for challenging us!

  1. Oh what a marvelous idea. I've handed a bag of cookies.. but how much more useful to add some needed supplies. I love this and will make up a few of those Blessing Bags.

  2. Christine ~ I felt a bit awkward too but thought I must enter into the spirit of RAKs.
It is heart breaking to see the homeless ~ but your act of kindness made a huge difference . . . . :)

  3. Well, I'm glad you got over your awkwardness and shared because this is VERY inspiring! What a great idea and I love the name.

I suppose some feel awkward because it's like bragging that you did some little deed, but really most of us are blessed with SO much that this is hardly anything to brag about. We are told to give and give generously and also to spur each other on to good works. Knowing what someone else did certainly does that and how can we be inspired if we don't share?

Thanks so much for joining in. I love that you even made the extra effort to get out and walk up to him. I'm sure you felt a blessing yourself...so very neat!

  4. Thanks for sharing this neat idea.... How wonderful and I am sure that the gentlemen was truly thankful. This is a great way to help instead of (like you said) turning your head
    blessings.

  6. This is such a good idea. What do you put in your bags? I have given away granola bars & potatoes when I have had them in the car. But usually I am empty handed. It would be so great if I could be prepared.

  7. I've heard of the blessing bags before. Your courage to get out of the car and walk up to this man is admirable. I'm sure he felt very blessed to receive it. Very nice RAK.

  10. We wouldn't mind hearing the rest of the story... what happened next, when you gave it to him? Was he surprised?

BTW, we just had a similar instance where we drove by someone who looked like a homeless person and my heart reached out.... but I didn't have anything to give at that moment. I want to be ready next time, and the next time after that.

Thank you for sharing this...... and encouraging us to do something too!

    Hugs,
    Brenda

  11. Wonderful!! I remember a time - where I passed by two sitting in the shade at a very busy traffic light/intersection. The look in their eyes still haunt me... as I passed them by.

Thank you for sharing this... and for the courage you showed and shared!! And... will there be "the rest of the story"?

  13. I never heard of a blessing bag before, but I know that any RAK is ever wasted. I like that you shared one of your many that happens during your ordinary week events. Who knows how God will use this story.

  16. I love this idea!!!!!!! A couple times or a course of a summer Wayne gets tickets courtesy of his job for the Cincinnati Red's baseball games. We normally pass by several homeless men and women on the way to and from our car. The last time we went I decided to put together a bag of grocery items, that would be filling and required no electricity to make. I prayed before we left how may bags to make and felt like I should do 5. Guess how many homeless we passed on our way to the gate... five! God is so good! I love your story and your idea of your premade bags. Living in the suburbs as we do , we don't encounter the homeless on a daily basis, but I will occasionally see them on the side of the road to and from the stores and malls. Thank you for sharing your inspiring story, may we all be aware of those around us that need love! Dee Dee

  17. Thank you for this inspiring message. No act of kindness goes unnoticed or unappreciated. Blessing bags are a wonderful way to spread kindness, and the reward is so much greater than the cost...to both the giver and recipient.
