Thanksgiving Decorations

Have you noticed that there are very few, if any,
Thanksgiving decorations for sale in stores?
Especially Pilgrims!
It goes from Halloween to Christmas.

  I have a small, but valued. collection of
Pilgrims and a few Indians.

What happened to our history and the stories
 of The Mayflower;
Pursuit of religious freedom;
Giving thanks to God for
even the smallest appreciation;
Friends helping and
sharing??
? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?

I let our grandchildren play with
my collection of Pilgrims.

I want them to know who about  our History
and why we celebrate.

This year, why don't you add a little American History to
your Thanksgiving table.
And be sure to thank
God for the many blessings
that he has given you.

Here are some facts about why we
 give THANKS
at this time of year.

1. The Pilgrims came to America to avoid religious rules imposed by England.
2. The Pilgrims asked the King to start a new church, he denied it.
3. The Pilgrims moved to Holland until 1620.
4. On December  11, 1620, they landed at Plymouth Rock.
5. The Wampanago Indians were the people who taught the Pilgrims how to
get the land ready for planting.
6. By the Fall of 1621, only have of the Pilgrims, who sailed on the Mayflower, survived. The survivors, thankful to be alive, decided to prepare a thanksgiving feast.
7. The chief of the Wampanago tribe and about 90 Indians were invited to the feast by the Pilgrim leader, Governor William Bradford.
8. The first Thanksgiving was actually a three days celebration.
 9. Plymouth, Massachusetts looks just like it did in the 17th century.

10, The first Thanksgiving was held in the autumn of 1621
11. Thanksgiving didn't become a national holiday until 200 years later.
 12. Sarah Josepha Hale, convinced President Lincoln to make it a national holiday,
after writing letters for 17 years.

  1. There are plenty of Pilgrim and other Thanksgiving decoration in Philly. You should come here and you'd have your pick!

    There are just a couple of things incorrect in your "facts." I have been to Plymouth several times and it is a modern city just like any other. The picture you showed is from Plimouth Plantation which is about 10 miles outside of the city and is a historic recreation. I have also been there and even wrote a paper on it for a college class I was taking. It is a great place to visit. The historic interpreters stay in character and if you ask them things like, "Did you ever think there would be TV?" they will look at you as if you are from another planet and answer in old English (which is different from what we speak and hard to understand) that they don't know what you are talking about.

    Also, the Pilgrims did not ask to start a new church. They disagreed with both the Catholic church and the Church of England and without permission started meeting in houses to worship as they saw fit. Because of this they were persecuted and moved to Holland to avoid the persecution. However, they did not fit in there well and so were eager to move to America where they would have more freedom. The King of England agreed because he was getting rid of them. Although they wanted religious freedom they were not tolerant of anyone who disagreed with them and persecuted all the Anabaptists. A good website for this is mayflowerhistory.com/religion.

    As I said I did a lot of research on this in college. I hope this is interesting to you. And I thoroughly agree that Thanksgiving is a skipped over holiday where God is put in the background and turkey is put on the throne.

    1. Thank you! Thank you Kathy!!
      My resources stand corrected!
      This just makes my point even more real!
      So much of our History is fading or getting mixed up.
      Being a Librarian, I trust you. Thanks again!

  2. Awe. what a wonderful collections of pilgrams. I have two. It's actually a large salt and pepper shaker that one of my daughters gave to me several years ago. It was a deal that Publix had and she bought me and her motherinlove a set. I love them. Thanks for all the facts too. We would probably be shocked to know just how many kids and adults have no clue about the pilgrims. Hugs and blessings, Cindy
